British Council Australia is proud to support Bat Night Market at World Science Festival Brisbane as part of our Connections Through Culture program, connecting Australian partner World Science Festival Brisbane with UK artist Robert Charles Johnson. The installation runs at Queensland Museum Kurilpa in March 2026.

Imagine a world without bats. No pollination. No pest control. No balance.

Bat Night Market is a multi-sensory installation set in a speculative future where bats are extinct. Styled as a futuristic Asian night market, it invites audiences to reflect on bats' ecological importance and the impact of their loss — and what it might mean for all of us.

Part science, part speculation, part sensory experience: step into a vibrant world where bat species are gone and humanity has had to get very creative. Explore what interspecies resourcefulness and creative food solutions might look like in the not-so-distant future, in a free, self-led experience that blends science, art and innovation.

Its Brisbane presentation marks a new phase with fresh collaborators, running for ten days at Queensland Museum Kurilpa during World Science Festival Brisbane 2026.

Bat Night Market is an international collaboration between artist Kuang-Yi Ku (Taiwan/Netherlands) and designer Robert Charles Johnson (UK), originally co-commissioned by LIFT and Taipei Performing Arts Centre.
