Vice Principal for Research, University of Aberdeen and World Health Organisation advisory groups
Professor Hannaford was appointed a Vice-Principal for Research and Knowledge Exchange in July 2011, with particular responsibility for research strategy and the University’s preparations for the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014.
After graduating from the University of Aberdeen in 1981 with MBChB, Professor Hannaford trained for general practice in Sheffield. He was a part-time research fellow and Principal in general practice before making research his full-time career in 1992. He was Director of the Royal College of General Practitioners’ (RCGP) Manchester Research Unit for three years before moving back to Aberdeen in 1997 when he took up the NHS Grampian Chair of Primary Care. Part of the remit of this post is to foster and develop research within the primary care community in Grampian.
Professor Hannaford’s main research interests are: female health issues, including the effects of oral contraception and hormone replacement therapy; primary care epidemiology; pharmacovigilance; population-based studies of symptoms; cardiovascular disease. He is guardian of the continuing 43-year old RCGP Oral Contraception Study, which is now housed in Aberdeen.
Outside commitments include work for: the World Health Organisation, including member of the Guideline Steering Group for WHO’s Evidence-based Contraceptive Guidelines; member of Medicines for Women’s Health Advisory Group, Commission on Human Medicines; and member of the REF Subpanel 2 (Public Health, Health Services and Primary Care).
In May 2010 he received the RCGP Foundation Council Award for services to the RCGP.
