Sweet solution to the bitter war on cancer

Sialic acid is a special type of sugar involved in the normal, healthy functioning of our cells. This sugar, however, also plays a cruel role in many devastating diseases, including cancer. Barbara studies the ‘transporter’ that is responsible for ferrying sialic acid into a membrane enclosed compartment where the sugar is able to be attached to the cell surface.

Dr James Makinson is a postdoctoral researcher in the Social Insects Lab at Sydney Uni. His academic career began with studying how Asian honey bees choose new nesting locations. Upon completing his PhD, James was still passionate about bees, so turned his attention to studying how urbanisation influences native bee diversity in Sydney. James is soon to relocate to London where he will study navigation in bumblebees.

Kimberley Moulton

Kimberley Moulton is a decedent of the Yorta-Yorta people from the James and Cooper family. Kimberley is Project Officer at Bunjilaka Aboriginal Cultural Centre, Melbourne Museum, her core role managing Birrarung Gallery. In 2010 Kimberley was one of ten from Australia chosen for the inaugural National Gallery of Australia Wesfarmers Indigenous Leadership Program participating also as a mentor for the program in 2011.

In 2010, Solomon was appointed founding Chairman of the Ngalmun Lagau Minaral TSI Corp, a community art centre on his beloved motherland of Mua Is. From late 2011 – 2012 he was appointed the founding Chairman of the advisory committee for the Indigenous Art Centre’s Alliance (IACA). In 2013 IACA was incorporated as an association and Solomon was made inaugural President. Solomon is also a practicing artist, whose works have been exhibited both nationally and internationally since 2001.
